TOUR DE SAUVABELIN

Start here. From the top of this 35m-tall tower, built in 2003, a 360° view opens up across several horizons: visitors can see the Lausanne metropolitan area, Lake Geneva, and Switzerland’s three geographical regions—the Alps, the Jura, and the Swiss Plateau. The tower was constructed using wood, primarily Douglas fir, sourced from the municipality’s forests.

At the base of the tower, continue along the paved forest path. At the end of the path, turn left, then head down to the right. At the bottom of the descent, cross the road at the crosswalk near a bus stop, then take the path that runs a short distance past a house with a pale orange facade. At the end of this path, you’ll arrive at the Signal de Sauvabelin.

From the look-out post, take the only downhill path, then the one that descends immediately to your left. Lower down, near a large left-hand bend, make your way down to the left. Behind the trees, you will be able to make out a large meadow, with tall grass in the summer months. Head down across the meadow via a pretty grassy path that leads you to an orchard. Lower down, you soon find yourself at the “Fondation de l’Hermitage”, an art gallery housed in a historic mansion and a nearby outbuilding. Allow yourself some time in the English gardens on the lake side.

The term "accrobranche" refers to an activity of climbing in the trees. "Accro" is French for "hang" as in "hook" and in this context is hanging or hooked onto a branch. Obviously for safety reasons, the activity consists of a series of steel cables (rather than branches) and carabiner hooks that are shackled to a harness.

Safety instructions are indicated verbally to each person by a qualified monitor in an initiation area before they go up in the circuit.

The two safety carabiners (hooks) are said to be "smart" and will prevent unintentional detachment. When moving, they must be hooked and unhooked one after the other on the continuous steel lifeline; only one of the two connectors can be detached at a time.

In addition, both carabiners must be hooked in such a way that the openings of the carabiners are in the same direction, pointing outwards.

Those of you new to the area may not have heard about the Soap Box Derby (Caisse à Savon), an annual event which takes place in various locations throughout the region. There will also be a Repair Café that day at the location.

It's probably too late for you to start building your soap box for the first event which takes place in Versoix this year on the 3 May 2026, so just come along and cheer the Soap Box Derby participants as they race past! Food and drink as well as some other stands are available to make it a great day out. Trial runs start at 10h and first races commence at 11h30.
